Analysis

Having lost their first game, the premiership favourites – Greater Western Sydney came on top of Port Adelaide to finish with a 31-point win in Canberra.

It was the likes of Scully, Shiel and Kelly averaging 30-disposals amongst each other that led the midfield battle for GWS, and the combination of Patton and Greene kicking six and four goals respectively to become eventual winners at UNSW Canberra Oval.

Despite the 31-point loss, Port Adelaide stood tall and challenged the Giants to enter the final term with a four-point lead. Skipper Travis Boak, half-back Jasper Pittard and stand in ruckman Jackson Trengove fought hard to keep the Power live in the contest.

The Giants stood out with their clearance, contested possession and tackle efforts to kick the last six goals and got their third win of the season in front of 9,185 people at the venue.

As expected the intensity prevailed early in the game as both teams were put under pressure with their disposals. Rory Lobb slotted the first major of the game after two poor behinds from Port Adelaide. The first quarter was quiet even as both teams went into the first break with four goals each with the Giants edging a three-point lead.

It was the Giants once again with the first goal of the second quarter as they continue to dominate with their forward half intercepts. It was the last 10 minutes of the quarter that changed the lead, as Port Adelaide kicked three of the last four goals to clinch a one-point lead into the second half.

The second half was also quiet even as Jonathon Patton kicked the first and last goal of the third quarter to register his fourth goal of the game. Although Port kicked three in a row to give them selves the biggest lead of the game, it was the Giants set shot accuracy that allowed them to stay in the game as Port entered the last quarter with a four-point advantage.

The final term of the game was a one-sided outing as the Giants dominated the hard fighting Power to kick five goals six to Ports one behind. Greater Western Sydney’s clearance and contested possession in the last quarter kept their opposition goalless.

GWS now sit fourth on the ladder as Port drop down to seventh position. The Giants will play rival Sydney Swans at the SCG as the Power hosts the Blues at Adelaide Oval to kick of the ANZAC round on Friday night.
